Vieux Carre’s Place d’Armes’ ArtBlock

Jackson Square holds several reminders of the resilience of all who stood side by side as equals defending the home we now call NOLA in the Battle of New Orleans, 1815. After the battle Vieux Carre’s Place d’Armes (Old Quarter’s Weapons Square) was renamed Jackson Square and at it’s heart resides a cast iron equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson. A lasting tribute commanding attention sitting atop his horse Duke while he rears up & tip his hat to the city of New Orleans. Ringing from the main bell tower of St. Louis Cathedral is ‘Victoire’, the bell named in honor of Gen. Andrew Jackson’s defeat of the English. St. Louis Cathedral’s smaller steeples also have something to say through their wrought iron finials. Adinkra symbols created by West African blacksmith craftsmen the ‘sankofa’, a stylized heart, translates to ‘success in the future is dependent upon reclaiming wisdom from the past’.
