Uptown Shotgun
ABOUT THE ART - This work was inspired by my love for New Orleans Creole cottages and shotgun homes which line it's streets. The architecture of these quaint home are anything but simple. Usually no more than 12 feet wide, with rooms arranged one behind the other and doors at each end of the house, the term "shotgun" is a reference to the idea that if all the doors are opened, a shotgun blast fired into the house from the front door would pass straight through the back door. One of my favorite parts of the shotgun homes are their front porches that beckon you to grab a rocking chair and rock the afternoon away while catching up with neighbors. Many of these porch ceilings are painting a specific shade of soft blue, called Haint Blue. Legends say it wards off evil spirits called 'haints'. Whether it wards off evil spirits or mosquitoes, these Nola porches welcome all who visit.
