Swans Of City Park
‘Swans Of City Park’ ArtBlock
White swans effortlessly glide across the waters of City Park under oak trees dripping with Spanish moss that sway in the gentle breeze. They splash their way under Langles Bridge up & down what remains of Bayou Metairie. A three-quarter mile long bayou, lined with sago palms, elephant ears, cypress trees & wild iris that provide habitats for herons, egrets, turtles, ducks & swans.
City Park, New Orleans began in 1891 when a donation of the first 100 acres came from the once Allard Plantation. Now the largest public park made up of approximately 1,300 acres, 50% larger than Central Park in New York City, holds the world's largest collection of mature live oak trees, some 600 plus years old. Langles Bridge, built in 1902 stretches over what remains of Bayou Metairie, an abandoned distributary of the Mississippi River which formed 2,600 years ago when the Mississippi river jumped its course. It is now a 20 mile long bayou which was used in the Civil War by runaway slaves & smugglers finding their way through the swamps using the elevated banks.
