Shotguns on Parade
My Kinda Happy Place…streets lined with colorful shotgun homes decked out in their Sunday Best, flaunting their Naturally Nawlin’s Flair, while welcoming over neighbors & friends alike to the porch to “pass a good time” and talk about “how’s yah mom'n'em”.
This Shotgun lined street is packed with my favorite architectural details from top to bottom like the clay ridge roof tiles, the carved finials capping the peaks of the gabled roofs, the vergeboard which is the tiny wooden lacey edge details on the molding, the carved corbels on the porches and the wrought iron vents adorning their foundations. I think I’ll walk on over to the purple house, sit on my little yellow porch swing and watch dusk roll on in.
Shotgun homes were built to beat the heat and do so In style! These distinctive narrow homes have been a fixture on the New Orleans landscape since the 1870’s. In an effort to battle the intense heat and humidity of the city shotgun homes were built with elongated windows and doors which allow a breeze to flow from the font door straight through the house out the backdoor. The term "shotgun" is a reference to the idea that if all the doors are opened, a shotgun blast fired into the house from the front door would pass straight through the back door.

I paint in an impasto style using oil paint with palette/painting knives. Painting with palette knives allow a freedom I never enjoyed with brushes. I'm drawn to New Orleans cityscapes and Louisiana landscapes. I'm inspired by the vibrant vivid colors and heavy textures achieved with this three dimensional painting style. I enjoy capturing a view that I would enjoy spending a couple of hours in front of, taking in all the flavor of my surrounding.
