Jackson Square Pigeonierre

from $110.00

Jackson Square, located inside the historic New Orleans French Quarter, is a favorite location for both tourist and locals alike. The beauty of the square captivates it's visitors so much so that most never notice the pigeonierre located in the front left corner. This unique structure has peeked my interest since a childhood school field trip. Pigeonierre's have a strong history in French culture and were a symbol of sustainable wealth. There were built with slits for the pigeons to fly into to roost. This allowed the landowner an opportunity to collect their eggs as well as their droppings. The droppings were used to produce a fertilizer called columbine which can also be used in the creation of gunpowder.

The variance of the city, elegance of it's architecture, and the mystique of it's streets draws me in. My favorite time of day to paint a scene is those few fleeting moments when day becomes night. Every color becomes more vivid and saturated in depth in those magical moments. Leaving me to wonder how many people have experienced this glorious moment in this historical spot.

Tourist and locals alike all take pause to absorb the beauty of Jackson Square daily and this piece captures this location in a way that your mind can wander from the 1800's to present day. It's all a matter of where you allow your day dreams to take you.

I paint in an impasto style using oil paint with palette/painting knives. Painting with palette knives allow a freedom I never enjoyed with brushes. I'm drawn to New Orleans cityscapes and Louisiana landscapes. I'm inspired by the vibrant vivid colors and heavy textures achieved with this three dimensional painting style. I enjoy capturing a view that I would enjoy spending a couple of hours in front of, taking in all the flavor of my surrounding.
