A Love Story forged in Iron…

In the heart of New Orleans, where history and legend entwine like vines there exists a tale as enduring as the city itself, a story whispered through generations, woven with romance and folklore.

For the dreamers and lovers, we cherish the most enchanting version: A devoted husband, yearning to ease his beloved wife’s homesickness, commissioned an iron fence that would forever remind her of the golden cornfields of Iowa. Each delicate stalk, each curling tendril of morning glory, was shaped not just from molten iron but from love itself, a love so strong, it still lingers in the air today.

The Cornstalk Fence is more than just an architectural gem; it’s a symbol of devotion, a testament to the power of place, memory and romance. Adorned with cornstalks, pumpkins, and morning glory vines, its intricate design can also be admired at: The Cornstalk Fence Hotel in the French Quarter (915 Royal Street), The Cornstalk Fence Mansion in the Garden District (1448 Fourth Street) along with scattered glimpses in the Marigny, Bayou St. John, Canal St. and at the Metal Museum in Philadelphia where its legendary castings were crafted.

So next time you pass one of these storied fences, pause for a moment. Run your fingers along its iron leaves and listen closely, you just might hear the echoes of a love that still whispers through the streets of New Orleans.

I paint in an impasto style using oil paint with palette/painting knives. Painting with palette knives allow a freedom I never enjoyed with brushes. I'm drawn to New Orleans cityscapes and Louisiana landscapes. I'm inspired by the vibrant vivid colors and heavy textures achieved with this three dimensional painting style. I enjoy capturing a view that I would enjoy spending a couple of hours in front of, taking in all the flavor of my surrounding.
