Beignets Are Callin'
Looking to time travel? The corner of Chartres St. and St Ann St. can do just that, as you walk along the Pontalba Apartment buildings and the wrought iron fence of Jackson Square. The sheer site of Café du Monde's iconic green and white stripe canopy on Decatur St. causes your mouth to water with anticipation for beignets. A square French-style doughnut lavishly covered with powdered sugar. Brought to New Orleans in the 18th century by both the French colonists and the Acadians, beignets became a large part of home-style Creole cooking. Now the official doughnut of Louisiana is considered to be breakfast but let’s be honest we eat them as the dessert they are. Beignets are meant to be eaten fresh and hot, just be sure not to inhale the powdered sugar while taking a bite.
Café du Monde, French for Café of the World or the People's Café, is a delight for tourists and locals alike. The French brought coffee as they settled along the Mississippi River in the 1700's. Due to a coffee shortage during the American Civil War New Orleans Creoles developed a chicory-blended coffee, which adds a chocolate like flavor. Café Du Monde continues that tradition daily serving is chicory café au lait.

I paint in an impasto style using oil paint with palette/painting knives. Painting with palette knives allow a freedom I never enjoyed with brushes. I'm drawn to New Orleans cityscapes and Louisiana landscapes. I'm inspired by the vibrant vivid colors and heavy textures achieved with this three dimensional painting style. I enjoy capturing a view that I would enjoy spending a couple of hours in front of, taking in all the flavor of my surrounding.
