Bead Tree - ArtBlock
‘Bead Tree’ ArtBlock
You know it’s Mardi Gras Season when Bead Trees are in Full Bloom! Louisiana may not have much when it comes to fall foliage, but in carnival season the trees along the parade routes sparkle and shine in all things purple, green & gold. Thousands of beads are tossed into the air by passing krewes and carnival goers. The beads catch on limbs and drape on branches resulting in an iconic festive sight creating a living, breathing canvas that encapsulates the diversity, culture and passion of our communities.
The Tree of Life, a name lovingly given by locals, officially the Étienne de Boray Oak, is located in Audubon Park near the Zoo’s giraffe enclosure. It’s one of the most majestic and oldest in the park, estimated between 200-500 years. Its sprawling branches rise to the sky with many draping down caressing the ground beneath it alongside its roots which appear to bubble from the earth.
Louisiana is draped in tradition so it seems fitting that our Tree Of Life & Mardi Gras geaux hand in hand.
