Bougainvillea Balcony

from $15.00

This painting is inspired by a day in the quarter, years ago, walking with my husband through the creole courtyard of the Antiques de Provence on Royal St. I fell in love with their large antique olive jars which once stored a families olive oil about 300 years ago, along with grains, wine and other liquids. Could they have possibly been early air conditioners? Possibly, if large jars were filled with water evaporation could then cool a home. Oh how I just want to chill in one of those chairs enjoying the music and energy of the street just beyond the courtyard gate. Hey while I’m imagining how about a sunset to watch too.

Ornate wrought iron is a visual cornerstone of New Orleans architecture throughout the historic French Quarter. Wrought iron, meaning worked by hand, made its first appearance in quarter in the mid-1800's, replacing tall wooden columns which previously supported the balconies and porches. Nothing says naturally Nawlin's better than a balcony covered in planter baskets filled with draping foliage and flowers topped off with hanging baskets potted with lush ferns gently blowing in the breeze.

I paint in an impasto style using oil paint with palette/painting knives. Painting with palette knives allow a freedom I never enjoyed with brushes. I'm drawn to New Orleans cityscapes and Louisiana landscapes. I'm inspired by the vibrant vivid colors and heavy textures achieved with this three dimensional painting style. I enjoy capturing a view that I would enjoy spending a couple of hours in front of, taking in all the flavor of my surrounding.
